When people think of God’s saving work (theologians refer to the “economic Trinity”), they know something of what God does in calling, and they are very familiar with what Christ does in dying for sin, but few are informed as to what the role of the Holy Spirit is in the work of conversion.
Thomas Allen (1608–1673), yet another relatively unknown Puritan preacher, helps us in this endeavor. In ten sermons he shows us that the Holy Spirit, convinces and convicts of sin, He reveals the righteousness of Christ to the sinner, and He draws men to Christ through the preaching of the gospel by faithful ministers.
