The Institutes of the Christian Religion is Calvin's single most important work. Yet, as many who have purchased an English translation of the final Latin edition of 1559 know only too well, the sheer size of the work and the proliferation of technical details and polemical themes do not make for easy reading. It has left many wishing for an edition that avoided such things but yet kept intact the very heart and soul of Calvin's teaching.
Such an edition is now available, and it is not the work of an editor or an abridger, but of Calvin himself. The present translation is newly made from the French of 1541 by Robert White. It has been designed and annotated with the needs of a wide readership in mind.
The Institutes of 1541 offer a clear and comprehensive account of the work of Father, Son and Holy Spirit in creation, revelation and redemption, in the life of the individual Christian and in the worship and witness of the church.
Condensed and indexed. Student or layperson. Most scholarly exposition of all time.
Calvin was not an ordinary Christian writer. More than extraordinary, his Institutes were the greatest work of literary genius of his time and remain a bedrock for the church theology today. Based on Bible teaching already accepted by the true Church, The Institutes retold the core Christian theology for a Reformation era. It was primarily an answer to Romish Catholicism and it’s attendant doctrines of “Justification by works”. But Calvin’s writings are by no means limited to one doctrinal argument: he is a writer of fascinating style and broad application to every area of the Christian Faith. Read it. Treasure it. Pray to understand the Bible the way Calvin did.
