The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden is a Newbery Honor-book that tells the story of Chester, Tucker, and Harry. Tucker is a city mouse who lives in the Times Square Subway Station and spends his days scrounging for food around New York with his friend Harry the cat. Then, one day, Tucker meets a country cricket from Connecticut named Chester at the Bellini’s newsstand. Together, Harry and Tucker show Chester around New York City and discover his amazing musical ability. With his unique talent, Chester is able to delight the people of New York and help the Bellini family business before returning to his home in the country. The Cricket in Times Square Student Guide trains students to become active readers by providing in-depth word studies that help students build vocabulary as well as comprehension questions to teach students to identify important concepts and compose clear, concise answers to questions.
The Cricket in Times Square Student Guide consists of lessons for the 15 chapters of The Cricket in Times Square each containing vocabulary work, comprehension questions, questions for discussion, and enrichment activities. The appendix includes a map of New England, a map of New York City, images of an Afghan Hound and a Chinese pagoda, and illustration pages. The answers are contained in The Cricket in Times Square Teacher Guide.
