Once a highly influential preacher in the Elizabethan Church and the international Reformed world, William Perkins (1558–1602) has become a rather surprisingly neglected figure in the history of the church. In this book, Joel Beeke, Sinclair Ferguson, Greg Salazar, Geoff Thomas, and Stephen Yuille seek to recover the importance of Perkins by situating his life, priorities, ministry challenges, and influence within their original seventeenth-century context. They help readers “to peer behind the veil” to see the real Perkins as he contended for the faith and attempted to shepherd God’s people in the midst of profound challenges. In this way, this volume will be both a reservoir of theological and practical truth and will foster a greater experiential knowledge of and love for the great God who William Perkins proclaimed and served.

This delightful and insightful book is brought together by contributors with not merely a deep knowledge of the Puritan movement, but in sympathy with its movers and shakers. William Perkins is brought to life to be enjoyed, digested and reflected over for the
first time in many years. He is introduced as an ‘Architect’, but he is revealed as a ‘Builder’ and ‘Resident’ of the truth he held on to so tenaciously. It is a wonderful introduction to his works and his method as a preaching pastor, or pastoral preaching whichever is preferred is an example that could be easily adapted for the modern congregation. The book is easy to read, is packed with helpful sub-headings and useful footnotes. One of the many forgotten Puritans, Perkins would sit easily alongside Baxter, Owen and Goodwin. I hotly commend this timely biography about a great man that lived in an era of greatness. Rating 5.
