Now, this classic volume has been re-typset and features a slimmer and handier trim size and an attractive new cover. First among the mighty (commentaries) for general usefulness we are bound to mention the man whose name is a household word, Matthew Henry. He is the most pious and pithy, sound and sensible, suggestive and sober, terse and trustworthy . . . he is deeply spiritual, heavenly, profitable; finding good matter in every text, and from all deducting the most practical and judicious lessons . . . It is the Christian's companion, suitable to everybody, instructive to all.

Stefan Morris A guest pastor to our church referred me to Matthew Henry's Commentary. Henry's inspirational wisdom of the Bible is compelling and exhaustive. I have read both the New Bible Commentary and The MacArthur Bible Commentary, which are both available at Reformers. Both are excellent commentaries, however Henry's commentary is on the next level. It is a huge and heavy tome and the font is ridiculously small, but reading Henry's insight and biblical knowledge is rewarding and uplifting. He intersperses the easily readable text with hebrew, latin and greek phrases to better explain the KJV translation. NIV readers would still profit from this regardless.

Famous evangelical Protestant preachers used and heartily commended the work, such as George Whitefield and Charles Spurgeon, with Whitefield reading it through four times – the last time on his knees. Spurgeon stated, "Every minister ought to read it entirely and carefully through once at least."
