David Palmer tells the fascinating story of Julius Frederick Ullmann who was born in Germany in 1817 and served as a faithful and effective missionary to the people of North-west India for 57 years, from 1839 to 1896. He was greatly loved by his brethren and highly esteemed by the native Indian population, both Christian and non-Christian. Ullmann was a fine linguist who rendered important service in translating the Scriptures and also in the production of Christian evangelistic literature and hymns in the vernacular. He was a man of devout spirit and earnest life-long missionary purpose.
A great strength of this book is the thoughtful use of the many letters written by Ullmann. They permit the reader to clearly hear the missionary's voice as he faced the challenging task with its highs and lows, disappointments and encouragements.
