The Sermon on the Mount is one of the most influential and most studied portions of the Bible. Every Christian generation turns to it for insight and guidance.
In this volume, John Pennington shows that the Sermon on the Mount offers a clear window into understanding God's work in Christ. He provides a historical, theological and literary commentary on the Sermon, and explains how this text offers insight into God's plan for human flourishing. He also relates the Sermon's theological themes to contemporary issues such as ethics, philosophy and economics.
"Is there need for another book on the Sermon on the Mount? Yes, because few others combine the strengths, clarity, pathos, and insight of this one... It is balanced, hermeneutically informed, and academically grounded without failing to be pastorally useful as well as theologically responsible."
- Robert W. Yarbrough, Covenant Theological Seminary
I love it when people explain a passage broadly and show how the biblical authors aren't just randomly jumping between subjects. While I'd like to read some other commentators on this, I think this was an excellent overview of the Sermon.
