How am I meant to feel as a Christian? You can go to an evangelical church on a Sunday and be told: "Christian, you are loved by God, no matter what you've done. God could not love you more than He does." You can go to another evangelical church and be told: "You're a wretched sinner". The emphasis can feel very different, and yet both churches are teaching truth.
Holding both truths together in balance can be tricky but it's essential for healthy Christian living. Over-emphasising one at the expense of the other causes all sorts of problems. Perfect Sinners will help us keep the balance, as we distinguish between our 'status' before God and our 'walk' with him.
"It's not only Biblically rich and beautifully written with quite brilliant stories and illustrations. It addresses supremely important questions that members of our congregations often ask about salvation in Christ: questions about God's love and our failure, about justification and transformation, about guilt and assurance, about falling away and discipline."
- Richard Coekin, Senior Pastor, Dundonald Church
I found this book such an encouragement in my walk with God and in my daily battle with sin. I am encouraged that God is on my side and working with me on the road of sanctification.
The author in this book helps the Christian to understand that their "Status" with God never changes, that God loves them, even though they sin and fail.
Hence, the author wants the Christian to realise that they can never lose their justified "Status" before God.
On the other hand the author explains that the Christian's "Walk" with God is variable, varying day by day, moment by moment, depending on our everyday feelings and obedience or disobedience toward Him.
The author in this book explains how we ought to have a balanced view of both realising our unchangeable Status before God and rejoicing in it and realising that our walk with God is variable and how we ought to be careful to obey Him in our everyday lives.
It is a book I recommend reading, especially for the doubting Christian.
