Two great books looking at the person and work of Christ:
by Dane Ortlund
Christians know what Jesus Christ has done—but who is he? What is his deepest heart for his people, weary and faltering on their journey toward heaven? Jesus said he is “gentle and lowly in heart.” This book reflects on these words, opening up a neglected yet central truth about who he is for sinners and sufferers today.

by Jonathan Edwards
Jonathan Edwards is considered by many historians to be one of the greatest intellects of his age. Even today, Edwards’s sermons and writings challenge the minds and inflame the hearts of Christians everywhere. The sermons included in Altogether Lovely reveal Jonathan Edwards’s deep affection for the glory and excellency of Jesus Christ.

Gentle and Lowly is like a hot cup of tea when you have a head cold- it explains and explores God's mercy and patience towards you and comforts your heart. Its so gentle and restoring in those moments you're discouraged by your own sin, failings, short-comings, or by sickness or pain that's been brought upon you. I've been reading a bit each morning as a devotional; small chapters make that easy.
Jonathan Edwards sermons came highly recommended by a number of other authors I've enjoyed, and while I'm not yet very far into his work, I've found his exegetical thoroughness and pastoral thoughtfulness translate well even to 21st Century readers. Another good book to nourish your soul.
