Martin Luther said: "We do not abolish the law, but know that the true function of the law is to force people to seek Christ... the law not only reveals man’s sins and God’s wrath, but also leads people to trust in Christ.” Calvin said, “Moses had only one wish, which is to invite people to directly take refuge in Christ.” John Bunyan said, “No. Those who know the essence of the law cannot know the essence of sin; those who do not know the essence of sin cannot know the essence of salvation." Spurgeon said: "Just as a sharp needle is for lead, a sharp law is for divine grace. Bright silver thread leads the way.”

Dr. Ryken cared very much about the Chinese church. In 2009, he was invited by the American Reformed Translation Fellowship to teach the Ten Commandments in China, and "The Holy Words on Stone Tablets" was the textbook he used at that time. The author is fluent in writing, concise and clear, explaining in a simple and profound way, allowing readers to explore the depth and richness of the Ten Commandments. The first three chapters explain that today’s generation still needs to abide by the Ten Commandments, the relationship between the Ten Commandments, Jesus Christ, and the gospel, how we interpret and apply the Ten Commandments, and the principles of interpretation of the Ten Commandments; chapters four to thirteen are detailed chapter by chapter. Each commandment allows readers to see what God’s will is in every real life level and in the various moral issues currently facing. There are questions for discussion at the end of each chapter of this book, which is very helpful for small group studies and Sunday school.
