In the early 20th century, evangelicalism emerged as a distinct movement. It emphasized the authority of the Bible, personal salvation, and the priority of evangelism. Prominent missionaries from this period are still looked up to today, including Elisabeth Elliot and Amy Carmichael. Through the horrors of the Second World War, Corrie ten Boom and Dietrich Bonhoeffer emerged as examples of courage and faithfulness.
