Find some books! Each generation of believers has been influenced by those who came before them. By reading books from the past, we're encouraged to thank God for faithful Christians who defended the truth and spurred the church on to love and obey God—and we see how important it is to carefully guard the pure gospel for the next generation.
This collection brings together some hand-picked highlights of the 20th century, introducing you to the books, missionaries, theologians, and pastors that shaped the church.
In the early 20th century, evangelicalism emerged as a distinct movement. It emphasized the authority of the Bible, personal salvation, and the priority of evangelism. Prominent missionaries from this period are still looked up to today, including Elisabeth Elliot and Amy Carmichael. Through the horrors of the Second World War, Corrie ten Boom and Dietrich Bonhoeffer emerged as examples of courage and faithfulness. Other influential pastors, writers, and theologians from the 20th century include C. S. Lewis, Martyn Lloyd-Jones, J. I. Packer, J. Gresham Machen, Francis Schaeffer, and Herman Bavinck.
