Ā
First published in 1700,Ā The Christianās Reasonable ServiceĀ (De Redelijke Godsdienst) ran through twenty Dutch editions in the eighteenth century alone! The title is derived from Romans 12:1, āI beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is yourĀ reasonable service.ā It expresses what God requires from man, and particularly from the Christian, that he serve Him in Spirit and in truthāintelligently, rationally, and in harmony with and response to Godās revelation of Himself, His Word.
With a decidedly Puritan flavor and representing Reformed experiential religion at its best, Wilhelmus Ć Brakel systematically moves through the major doctrines of the Bible in hopes of seeing the minds of Godās people renewed for the purpose of promoting godliness. Throughout his work, but particularly in the practical application of each doctrine, Ć Brakel strives unceasingly to exalt the name of Jesus as the name that the Father has given above every other nameāthere being no other name given under heaven among men whereby we must be saved (Acts 4:12).Ā

Working my way through this first of four volumes. Brakel combines the rigorous scholasticism typical of 17th C. Reformed theology with a pastoral heart. Every page and point is replete with scripture citations printed in full. Having scanned volumes 2-4 in topics that are of particular interest to me, I can see that thsi is not dry academic theology at all. For example, the author provides examples from his many years of pastoring to illustrate points. In these respects Brakel's systematic theology is quite unlike any other. This is not easy reading but close study will be repaid many times over.
