Find some books! From "In the beginning" to the final "Amen" of Revelation, He tells us the greatest story ever told. It's no accident that He chose to reveal Himself through story - He made us to be story-driven people. We interpret our lives as stories, and the stories we know shape how we view our world.
This is why surrounding our children with Bible stories is so crucial. These aren't just moral tales or interesting historical accounts. They form the foundation for understanding the gospel and help our children see their own lives as part of God's continuing story.
When we tell our children about Jesus, the gospel makes sense because of all the back story that came before. The Old Testament stories are shadows and pictures of Jesus. When children learn about Abraham offering Isaac, they're better equipped to understand God offering His Son. When they hear about God rescuing His people through Moses, they begin to grasp how Jesus delivers us from sin.
Sacrifices point us to Jesus' sacrifice, ceremonial washings point us to Jesus' cleansing us from sin and the temple points us to God dwelling among us in the person of Jesus Christ.
But the various narratives in scripture also point us to Jesus. Jesus is a greater king than David, a better prophet than Moses, a greater priest than Aaron. Jesus is the one who died and rose again like Joseph, Jonah and Daniel.
Bible stories also help our children interpret their own lives. We might recognize Joseph's story-line in our own circumstances, helping us trust God's sovereign plan even in difficult times. Or we might feel Cain's anger rising in our hearts and, knowing how his story ends, choose a different path. These stories become part of our children's spiritual vocabulary, helping them understand both God's character and their own hearts.
One of the most effective ways to encourage Bible story engagement is to surround our children with good books. When children see their parents reading and have easy access to books themselves, they naturally develop an interest in reading. This is particularly true with Bible stories.
There are many opportunities throughout the day to read Bible stories together:
For children aged 2-10, several resources stand out for their faithful and engaging presentation of Bible stories:
"The Garden, The Curtain and the Cross" is the best-selling book in the Tales that Tell the Truth series, and for good reason. It provides a beautiful framework for understanding the whole Bible as the story of God living with His people. Using the temple as a central image, it helps children grasp the grand narrative of Scripture and see how it all points to Jesus.
For daily reading, The Beginner's Gospel Story Bible has proven to be a family favorite. It features 52 stories with beautiful illustrations and thoughtful reflection questions. As Kate, one parent shares: "We love this Children's Bible. It tells 52 stories with a good amount of detail for preschoolers and beautiful pictures, and has a reflection question at the end of each story. We read it every day with our 3 year old and she loves it."
The Biggest Story Storybook Bible brings deep biblical theology to a child's level. Laura, a primary teacher, gives it high praise: "Amazing theology accessible for young minds. The best kids storybook Bible I've ever bought (and as a primary teacher, I have a lot!)" This Bible helps children see how all the individual stories connect to tell one magnificent story about Jesus.
For children aged 2-10, there are excellent resources available that present Bible stories faithfully and engagingly:
The Very Best Bible Stories series presents individual Bible stories with beautiful illustrations and clear gospel connections. Each book helps children see how the story points to Jesus while engaging them at their level.
The Tales that Tell the Truth series excels at showing how all of Scripture points to Christ. These books take both familiar and less-known Bible stories and help children understand their place in God's big story.
For systematic reading through Scripture, various children's Story Bibles provide a comprehensive journey through God's Word. Reading just one story each evening as part of family worship can take you through the whole Bible together.
Begin by choosing one or two quality Bible story books and establishing a regular reading time with your children. Whether it's morning devotions, bedtime stories, or family worship, consistency helps children look forward to these special times of learning God's Word together.
Remember, the goal isn't just to familiarize our children with Bible stories - it's to help them see their place in God's continuing story and understand the gospel that all these stories point toward.
