Hello, my name is James, and today I'd like to recommend to you 'On the Christian Life' by John Calvin. This little book is an excerpt of Calvin's Book Three of the 'Institutes of the Christian Religion,' chapters 6 to 10. It focuses on what the Christian life looks like in practice and how Jesus sustains us by grace every step of the way. It has a lot to say about self-denial and what it means to surrender everything to Jesus.
I'll just read one quote for you that I found particularly powerful. Calvin writes: 'But when Scripture directs us to put aside personal concern for ourselves, it not only erases from our minds the craving to possess and the longing for power and favour in the eyes of others but also uproots ambition and all yearning for human glory, as well as more hidden plagues.'
He was a surgeon of the soul, Calvin. This new publication by Crossway features a modern translation, a contemporary translation of the Institutes that is easy to understand and accessible for all readers. It's a beautiful gold-embossed cover, and it's a small book as well, so really easy to get through and a great gift idea.
It's on sale at Reformers at the moment for a great price, so get in there while you can and grab a copy for yourself and for a friend.
