Rise and Triumph is not a book you whizz through in half a day. It gives a thoughtful and detailed analysis of how modern western culture got to where it is now. I’m only halfway through but looking forward to finishing
In The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self, Carl Truman sets out to write a history of the philosophy of identity.
The result is a compelling and engaging narrative which takes the reader from Rousseau though to the modern day, weaving history, philosophy and literature together to explain how we got to the point where the statement "I am a man inside a woman's body" makes any sense at all.
At 400 pages long, this book is not for the faint hearted, but I am convinced that the history Truman presents will equip any reader to see what is happening in our culture with clearer sight enabling a greater level of engagement and immunisation against the prevailing philosophies of the day.
