Hitting the Holy Road

I LOVED this book! The chapters are super short, so it's very readable. It starts off with a brief description of a location in the current day, which I loved. Then covers a moment in history, which was very interesting but also often quite disturbing and so the thing that I thought was a real strength of the book (I personally benefited a lot from it) was the short reflection concluding each chapter. The reflection section helped me to be able to work out how I'm meant to think about things that have happened in church history that aren't quite right or are downright terrible. I understand that the book has a trajectory to travel towards the Reformation, but my request or critique would be that I would have loved more (!) and I particularly would have liked it to have delved in to the African history of early Christianity. I would (and do) highly recommend this book. I do think it's an accessible and engaging introduction to church history (I'm a novice). I'm intending to re-read it in a year or two because I'm sure I'll get more out of it (or recall more) with a second read.
